All right let’s talk: You and your spouse decide to get divorced. It’s amicable, you create separate households, you separate your finances, the kids are fine. You just never get around to doing the legal part of getting a divorce.
What’s the worst that can happen, right?
Well, fast forward 20 years and one of you becomes hospitalized and seriously ill and someone needs to make a decision about the kind of care that you’re going to receive, and whether or not life support should continue. Whose decision is it? You have separate homes, you have new partners, your children are adults.
It’s not your new partner’s decision, it’s not your adult children’s decision. Legally it’s your former spouse’s decision. So if you’re gonna get a divorce, no matter how amicable it is, make sure you finish all of the paperwork.
